We know mining for fossil fuels is unsustainable yet the vast majority of activewear is made from plastics such as polyester that come from those fossil fuels.

We want to conserve natural resources, protect biodiversity and eliminate harmful pollution. We’ve looked at every stage of the supply chain – the crops, the processes needed, even the way we dispose of our clothing at the end of its use.

89% of our fibres are biodegradable and made from natural, renewable raw materials. We champion bamboo because it can be made into an unbeatably soft fabric. It’s the fastest growing crop on the planet and it absorbs five times more carbon than hardwood trees. Unlike hardwood trees or cotton, the roots stay in the ground when harvested so it’s much better for biodiversity and actually improves soil health even on degraded land. And it doesn’t need irrigation or pesticides. But we’re no less stringent with how we source our other fabrics, our cotton is organic, we use recycled polyester, responsibly sourced wool relying on transaction certificates to verify their origin.

SYNTHETIC 10.9%

We also turn the spotlight onto the processes used in making our fibres. Turning bamboo into bamboo viscose is a chemical process. From chemicals to water to land cultivation, we’ve worked hard to ensure our bamboo viscose the best in the business. Life cycle analysts Green Story record the lower impact of our products compared to conventional cotton.

Sometimes synthetics are the right choice for performance. But polyester production is set to hit 1400 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2030 and 69% of textiles are virgin synthetics made from crude oil. We can’t and won’t add to that. The goal must be zero virgin polyester partnered with zero to landfill. Our fully circular range – 73 Zero – does just that. We use 100% recycled materials which can then be 100% recycled. Because we can’t make clothes and not care where they end up. That’s our responsibility too.

ZDHC Foundation

We’re a member of the ZDHC Foundation (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) Foundation, an industry body working to lower emissions and improve chemistry and waste treatment in a way that’s open and transparent. To ensure sustainable chemical management, ZDHC instigated the shift in the cleaning up of the dyeing and finishing industry over the last ten years. ZDHC are also now focused on viscose. We are working with our producers to ensure they engage with ZDHC’s rigorous assessment of their chemical management which will support their constant improvement.

Did you know that there’s a fungi that eats plastic?

We’ve invested in a bio-remediation project that is investigating just that and whether we can find new sustainable ways to breakdown and remove synthetics from landfill.

Nature Positive

In 2021, we commissioned a study with biodiversity experts Nature Positive to look at the impacts our fabrics could have on biodiversity in China. We’re using the findings of this report to create a bespoke bamboo standard for BAM to recognise the best practices of bamboo growers, the highest levels of sustainability and ultimately measure the positive impact it can have on nature.
