Walking the Coast of Britain

Chrishoward

We’ve all done our bit for charity, a bake sale here, sponsored something or other there. But not many of us will be able to say we’ve done anything remotely similar to what Chris Howard is taking on.

Who is Chris?

Since being in touch with Chris we have loved keeping up to date with him on social media where he promotes the positive effects of the outdoors on mental health. In his regular blog posts, Chris often accounts for his own mental health journey and discusses how getting out in nature has helped him to grow and continue growing. He almost see’s it a challenge in itself to make sure he never stops growing.

I am proof that you can be a better version of yourself by embracing the outdoors and all it has to offer.”

Walking the Coast of Britain

Chris has taken on the mammoth challenge of walking the coast of mainland Britain to raise money for BBC Children in Need. Why? Well during the first lockdown in 2020 Chris decided he wanted to make it his mission to do something positive out of the pandemic. So that’s exactly what he’s done. He set out on this epic trek going clockwise and starting from Norfolk. Walking in all weather, Chris is going to walk a grand total of 11,000 miles of coastline around mainland Britain and he doesn’t expect to make it home much before March 2022. Having left his family at home, it’s his ultimate motivation to make it back as quickly as possible. And with over 300 days of walking completed and over £26k raised for charity, Chris persists with his journey.

Chris is a great storyteller and in his blog posts, he documents his journey, and you almost feel as though you are there with him. With nothing more than a bag on his back Chris has to be self-sufficient, largely relying on his own supplies. This means every night he needs to find a place to stay and often this is outdoors, in a sleeping bag and bivvy. From caves to lighthouses and even under old boats! Sometimes, like in one of his recent blog entries, this might just have to be an old telephone box. Yep, really!

Each new day brings Chris to a different location with new opportunities. He tells us he’s been able to enjoy swimming with seals and dolphins, stumbling across waterfalls, taking in breathtaking views of mountains, walking with herds of red deer and even climbed all three national summits along his way. He also accounts for all of the wonderful passers-by who might recognise him or talk to him to learn about his story. Craving conversation, Chris enjoys connecting with others along his way. He’s even been supported by a number of friendly locals who offer him a place to stay, a bite to eat or even a place to do his laundry.

Let’s all celebrate Chris and his epic adventure so far! We can’t wait to stay up to date with his latest.
