Meet the Trail (and Our Guide)

We caught up with Gemma – known to her followers as @wandering_wilma_ – an avid hiker and outdoor adventurer who spends her weekends discovering the very best the UK has to offer. She’s been kind enough to share one of her most-loved routes with us, and it’s a good one.

Nestled in the heart of the Buttermere Valley, Rannerdale Knotts captures everything we love about the Lakes: gentle fells, bursts of seasonal colour, and a stillness that feels miles from the everyday. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply craving fresh air and open skies, this trail has something special waiting for you.

Read on for Gemma’s personal insights, secret spots, and the BAM kit she never hits the trail without.

Gemma’s Guide to Rannerdale Knotts

What makes this a hike to remember?

“This route is an absolute favourite and can be enjoyed either at a low level or from the surrounding fells.”

Is there a best time to visit?

“I particularly enjoy Rannerdale Knotts in May when the Bluebells coat the valley floor and the Gorse is out in full force.”

Where do you head for lunch?

“My favourite lunch spot would have to be at the summit where you can take in all the views or down by the stream surrounded by Bluebells.”

Any hidden gems worth knowing about?

“There’s a few hidden gems in the area, including Buttermere infinity pool which on a warm, clear day is incredible for a post hike dip or just to enjoy the views over the valley. You’ll have an amazing day on the trail, it feels so tranquil and serene.”

Top tip for first-timers?

“Arrive early as parking is quite limited in the area but you’ll also get to enjoy a much quieter walk.”

What keeps you coming back to the outdoors?

“I genuinely just love being outdoors, whether it’s up a mountain or in the local park. I find it really helps clear my mind and appreciate the little things in life – catching a beautiful sunrise/sunset, watching the wildlife or even just feeling the breeze on your face after a long day indoors.

I also love to challenge myself mentally and physically and hiking has been a big part of this for a number of years now, along with open water swimming and running.”
